Scope Out Privacy Policy

Data Collection

Scope Out does not collect any personal data. There are no user accounts, no analytics, no advertising identifiers, and no crash- or usage-tracking services built into the app. Nothing you do in the app is sent to us, because we don't operate any servers that the app talks to.

Location Data

Scope Out asks for permission to use your device's location so it can calculate which planets and stars are above the horizon, and in which direction to look, from where you are right now. This calculation happens entirely on your device.

Your location is also used for two on-demand lookups, both triggered only by your actions in the app:

• Weather conditions: your coordinates are sent to the U.S. National Weather Service's public forecast API (api.weather.gov) to retrieve cloud cover for your area, so the app can tell you how good the viewing conditions are. This is a direct, one-off request — Scope Out does not run its own server and never sees or stores this data.
• Manual location search: if you type in a city name instead of using GPS, that text is resolved to coordinates using your device's built-in geocoding service (provided by Apple or Google as part of the operating system), not by Scope Out or any service we operate.

Your location is never stored on a server, never linked to your identity, and never shared with advertisers or analytics companies. It stays on your device, except for the two lookups above, each of which sends only coordinates — never your name, device identifiers, or any other personal information.

You can deny or revoke location access at any time in your device's Settings. Without it, Scope Out can still be used with a manually entered location, though some features may be limited.

Device Sensors

Scope Out uses your device's compass/motion sensors (when you open the sky map) to orient the on-screen display to match the direction you're pointing your device. This data is processed on your device in real time and is never recorded or transmitted anywhere.

Third-Party Services

The only outside service Scope Out communicates with is the U.S. National Weather Service's public forecast API, described above, and (for manually typed locations) your device's own operating-system geocoding service. Scope Out does not integrate any advertising, analytics, or tracking SDKs.
